Agile Methodology is a project management approach that emphasizes iterative development, team collaboration, and adaptive planning to deliver value to customers more efficiently and with greater flexibility than traditional methods. While originating in software development, its principles are now widely applied across various industries.
Core Principles (The Agile Manifesto)
The Agile Methodology is guided by four core values outlined in the "Manifesto for Agile Software Development":
- Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
- Working software over comprehensive documentation
- Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
- Responding to change over following a plan
This philosophy prioritizes flexibility, communication, and delivering functional results in small, regular increments.
Common Agile Frameworks
Several frameworks can be used to implement the Agile Methodology, with the two most common being:
- Scrum: This framework uses a time-boxed, iterative approach. Work is completed in fixed-length iterations called "sprints," which are typically one to four weeks long.
- Kanban: This framework focuses on visualizing work, limiting work in progress (WIP), and maximizing flow. It uses a Kanban Board to track tasks as they move through different stages of a process.
How It Works
Instead of one long project cycle, Agile breaks down large projects into smaller, manageable chunks. The team works in iterative cycles (or "sprints") to plan, design, build, and test a small piece of the project. At the end of each cycle, the team reviews the work with stakeholders and uses their feedback to adapt and plan the next cycle, ensuring the final product is aligned with user needs.
Real-World Application in Real Estate
In the Philippine real estate industry, Agile principles can be used to enhance sales and marketing operations. A brokerage can use a Kanban Board to visually manage its sales pipeline, moving client cards from "New Inquiry" to "Site Visit" to "Reservation Pending" and so on.
This approach provides real-time visibility into the team's progress. If many clients are stuck at one stage, the team can quickly identify the bottleneck and "respond to change" by reallocating resources or adjusting their strategy. This is more efficient than waiting months to discover a problem, making it a powerful tool for managing the complex workflow management system of a real estate transaction.
