Single Sign-On

Single sign-on (SSO) is an authentication method that allows users to access multiple independent software systems using one set of login credentials. In Philippine real estate platforms, SSO enables agents to register and sign in through existing Google or Facebook accounts, reducing registration friction and improving user adoption.

Key Components

  • Identity Provider (IdP): The trusted system that authenticates users and issues security tokens (e.g., Google, Facebook)
  • Service Provider (SP): The application requesting authentication (e.g., real estate management platform)
  • Authentication Token: A secure credential passed between IdP and SP to verify user identity
  • OAuth 2.0: The authorization protocol commonly used for social login implementations
  • Session Management: The mechanism that maintains user login state across multiple applications

How It Works

  1. You click "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Facebook" on the registration page
  2. The platform redirects you to the identity provider (Google/Facebook)
  3. You authenticate with your existing credentials on the IdP
  4. The IdP sends an authentication token back to the platform
  5. The platform validates the token and creates your user session
  6. You gain access without creating a new username and password

Pros & Cons

Advantages:

  • Reduces registration abandonment by eliminating new password creation
  • Improves security by relying on established identity providers with multi-factor authentication
  • Decreases password fatigue for users managing multiple accounts
  • Simplifies user onboarding for real estate agents and brokers

Disadvantages:

  • Creates dependency on third-party identity providers
  • May raise data privacy concerns under the Data Privacy Act (RA 10173)
  • Requires internet connectivity to authenticate
  • Account recovery becomes complex if users lose access to their IdP account

Real-World Application

For Philippine real estate brokerages, SSO integration addresses a common pain point: agent registration friction. When PRC-licensed brokers and salespersons join a realty hub, they can use their existing Google or Facebook accounts instead of creating yet another login credential.

You can integrate SSO with:

This reduces the time-to-productivity for new agents, allowing them to immediately access property listings, CRM tools, and commission tracking features.
